Small spaces in your home can really get you down sometimes. No need to worry friends, I have a few tips that I hope will help you fix those spaces. We have a few small spaces in our home that are small and are sometimes hard to get the most out of. Over the years I have come up with these tips that have helped us in our home to highlight those so-called small spaces that are hopeless.
Where do you start? Start with where are these spaces in your home. Our home has a small hallway, a room, and a weird wall against which a door opens. These spaces kick my butt when it came to figuring out how to make them as we say pretty. I now start with these tips now each time I want to make a change to them.
Do you need thin decor in this space?
What do I mean by this? Is this space one that you can not have pieces sticking out that you can run into? The wall in our living room is this time of space that needs thin decor. This is where I love using a wall rack whether it be a shaker peg rail or one that you purchase in a store with hooks. I do try to make sure there is a little bit of an edge to be able to put a picture frame or a sign on it to fill the wall space.
The decor will work differently in everyone’s home but, for our home using a shaker peg rail works best for us. We can layer a few pieces of art on the thin shelf attached that way it is flat against the wall and does not interfere with the opening door. Also having the hooks you can layer throws, baskets, and jackets that you are using daily here for the season. This is a great way to make this space useable and pretty all in one.
Think Open
What do I mean by this? Keep spaces as open as you especially in a small room. Small options for small rooms will help keep the room open and feel much larger than it actually is. For example, our office room is not that large of a room. Instead of using a large desk or chair. We did a smaller desk in the center of the room and a small chair that way the space around was still open. Placing the desk in the center to leave open space and then you want to add anything, add slender tall pieces. We did lockers in here for storage and to fill space without overcrowding. Remember to go up in smaller spaces.
Light Weight Tones
Light weigh tones? Do you mean textures or colors? I mean all things. My number one tip to someone when they ask me how to make a small space look bigger, it is to use a light color of paint. This does not mean that you have to paint the walls white but, any lighter shade will make a smaller space look roomy. Also if you do have light paint in this space and it is still feeling too heavy then, you can change the textures to any lightweight. This will really make a space cozy and roomy all in one.
Less is More
Finally, the advice I like to give but, have a hard time taking it myself. Less is more especially in small spaces. Many times more often than not we feel that we have to fill every inch of space. This is not the case in small spaces. Keeping things simple will still give you the impact you are wanting in this space but, also let it breathe. Just like our entryway, for the longest time, I felt that it had throws, bags, and hats hanging on everything and finally, I took my own advice. Keep it simple and less is more. Just a simple throw and pillow paired with the bench and tree create a cozy space without looking overdone. Remember friends less really can be more.
Creating a cozy home can be possible in any size home. I hope these tips that I use to create those cozy spaces in small rooms really help you in those stubborn spaces.
