Last year when I began styling for Memorial Day, I wanted to find some vintage American flags. After many antique stores and hours of picking, I was only able to find one. We all know that just one small flag would not be enough to show the Patriotic spirit. While trying to find vintage flags, I walked into the Target and saw all of the flags in the dollar spot.
I grabbed a few flags of each sizes and started to think how can I make these look vintage without damaging the flag. Over the years I have seen people use tea to dye fabric and I thought why not? That was the plan for when I got home.
What you will need:
I started out by filling the pot with water and adding the tea bags to boil. Once the water was boiling for two minutes, I turned off the burner and set the pot of tea off to the size of the stove. I let the tea sit off to the side for ten minutes.
While the tea was steeping, I put two sheets of aluminum foil on the counter to lay the flags on while the tea was drying on the flags. I poured the steeped tea into the ceramic bowl. Once I had the tea in the bowl I started to put the flags in. Make sure when you put the flags in you submerge them completely or as much as you can.
If you can not submerge them completely you can fix it once you lay the flag out to dry. The flags were in the bowl for 15 minutes. After 15 minutes I took the tongs and pulled the flags out and laid them on the foil to dry. This is where you can add additional tea to the part you could not get into the bowl.
I let the flags lay out for 15 minutes and then I rinsed them in warm water to get the tea out of the flags. The flag were left with the vintage color. I set them outside to dry and there they were vintage looking and all.
I hope that you can create your own vintage inspired American Flags and thank you for stopping by the blog today and everyday, XOXO
I saw you do this on InstaStories and loved it. I am hoping to do this. Now I just need to get me some flags. Hugs
Working on my flags now. Thank you ????????????????????????????????
Jessica,
What a great idea! I completely forgot about using tea bags to age things. We used to do that with paper when we needed an old looking document or parchment! Love this idea!
